What Is Flying Dress Photography?Flying dress photography is a specialized photoshoot where subjects wear elegant, flowing gowns designed to catch the wind, creating a dynamic and ethereal effect. These photoshoots are often set in picturesque outdoor locations, such as beaches, deserts, or mountain landscapes, to enhance the dramatic movement of the dress.
-
Can I Choose My Own Colors and Styles?Yes! Most photographers offer a selection of flying dresses in different colors and designs. When choosing a color, consider: Bold colors (red, emerald, royal blue) for contrast against natural landscapes. Soft pastels (pink, lavender, white) for a dreamy, ethereal look. Metallics (gold, silver) for a luxurious feel in desert or city settings. Discuss your vision with the photographer to ensure your chosen dress complements the location and your personal style.
-
Scout the Location Ahead of TimeVisit the location beforehand to: Find the best angles and understand the quality of lighting at the expected time, especially during the limited window of 'good light' at sunrise and sunset Identify landmarks or natural features to use for framing Decide where you’ll position yourself for the moment of the proposal, ensuring you secure the perfect spot before the couple arrives Figure out where to stand without being seen — think bushes, trees, distance, or blending in as a tourist or beachgoer
-
Capture the MomentOnce the proposer starts to get down on one knee, start firing. Capture: The reaction (shock, joy, tears) The gesture (kneeling, ring box, holding hands) The setting (include the landscape to tell the story) The wide shot (establish the scene before moving to medium and tight shots) Stay alert. The moment moves quickly, and expressions change in seconds. Shoot continuously to capture each frame of emotion. Remember, the most important shot is the one that captures the pivotal moments, such as the kneeling proposal and the couples' interactions. Plan ahead and communicate with your clients to ensure these critical images are captured effectively.
-
Blend In and Stay DiscreetArrive early and position yourself in a spot with a clear view, blending in while hiding in plain sight Stay calm and patient — sometimes the timing shifts, and you need to adapt without panicking, ensuring you hide effectively to remain discreet
-
Pre-Plan Everything with the ProposerStart with a solid consultation. Ask the proposer: Where and when they plan to propose The backstory (are they telling their partner it’s a vacation photoshoot, a beach walk, etc.) Any specific moments or gestures they want captured (e.g. getting down on one knee, showing the ring, a specific reaction) Their biggest fears — and help ease them Planning in advance is crucial. Scout the location ahead of time to assess lighting conditions and discuss all details with the client to avoid any last-minute issues.
